Book One of the Pentas Bay Series · M. Romy
She was always meant to be here
The Story
Some cities swallow you whole. Pentas Bay does something quieter. It waits.
When Noa DeLuca leaves Beverly Hills behind and moves to a small coastal town in Florida, she tells herself it's temporary. A fresh start. A strategic choice. What she doesn't say out loud — not even to herself — is that there is nothing left to go back to. Her parents are gone. Her old life is gone. And the girl she used to be feels like someone she barely recognizes anymore.
Pentas Bay was never supposed to matter. Then it does.
In the space of one semester, Noa finds herself surrounded by people she never expected — a group of strangers who become something closer to family than she thought possible this soon. A best friend who makes her laugh until she forgets to be sad. A boy who looks at her like she's worth staying for. And a complicated, infuriating presence she can't quite figure out — or ignore.
But beneath the surface of this sun-soaked town, something darker is moving. And the person closest to her is in more danger than any of them realize.
Pentas Bay is a story about grief and what grows in its place. About chosen family, first love, and the courage it takes to let people in when you've already lost everything once.
Some beginnings feel like endings. This one just might be both.
Read Book OneThe Residents
Pentas Bay was always her plan — PB University, the house her father Luciano bought for her and Blake, a future she'd already mapped out from Beverly Hills. Then her parents died and she arrived anyway. Alone, ahead of schedule, carrying grief and a set of keys to a house that was meant to feel like home.
Main CharacterAmbitious, hardworking, and unflinchingly capable — just like their father. Blake was already deep into her residency at PB Memorial when Noa arrived. She holds everything together so her little sister doesn't have to. She's been doing that her whole life. Whether she wants to stop is a different question.
Noa's SisterPre-law, from Boston, and Eliot's roommate. He's steady, present, and genuinely good — the kind of person who shows up when it matters and asks for nothing in return. He carries something heavy, though he rarely lets it show. The kind of person you trust immediately, which makes everything more complicated.
The ConstantPre-law, sharp, and carrying his father's last name like a weight he never asked for. His dad is ruthless and powerful; his mom Amanda is warm but spectacularly irresponsible. Growing up, Eliot's house was more home than his own. He'd do anything for Eliot — and almost nothing for anyone else. Then Noa showed up.
The Complicated OnePre-med, one of five siblings, raised in a house full of noise and unconditional love. Eliot is the kind of person who makes any room feel easier — Julian's oldest friend, Matt's roommate, and quickly Noa's person. He deflects everything with humour and sarcasm, which works brilliantly as a strategy until it comes to Harper.
The Comic Relief (with depth)Ginger curls, a future in journalism, and the kind of warmth that makes people trust her immediately. She practically raised herself — her mom Ashlyn never quite recovered from being left, and Harper learned early to take care of everything on her own. She became Noa's best friend within days of meeting her.
The Heart of the GroupBusiness student, Harper's roommate, and the most visibly put-together person in Pentas Bay. She grew up in Chicago with parents who cared deeply about appearances. Brooke became very good at meeting their standards. She colour-codes her planner, folds her towels with precision, and always knows the right thing to say.
The Type-A OneHe owns PB Brew on the promenade and Pentilla right next door — somehow making both feel like exactly where you're supposed to be. He's the kind of person who remembers your order and your bad week and makes you feel seen without making a thing of it. Blake's closest friend in town, and the one person who sees through her carefully managed composure.
The Anchor of the GroupThe Setting
A luxury coastal town named after the pentas flowers that bloom along every street. The kind of place where everything looks perfect from the outside — and the secrets live just beneath the surface.
Where Blake DeLuca spends her nights. Small enough to feel personal, large enough to carry everyone's emergencies — and secrets.
Where Noa starts over academically and accidentally starts over socially too. The campus is small. Running into someone is unavoidable.
Karim's café on the promenade. The group's unofficial headquarters — where most things start and a few things end.
Karim's club, right next to the Brew. Where the group lets loose after everything else. The line between evening and early morning blurs easily here.
The heart of Pentas Bay — lined with pentas flowers year-round. The place where everyone ends up, one way or another.
The kind of beach that looks like a postcard. Where things get said that can't be unsaid — and the water makes honesty feel easier.
